Both supervised learning and reinforcement learning were used to improve the language model. What makes ChatGPT particularly distinctive is the application of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). According to OpenAI, human AI trainers used RLHF to feed the model with discussions in which they acted as both the user and the AI aides.

2. Fact-checking answers with the web search

As we all know, large language models have a tendency to make up certain facts or make mistakes in logical reasoning or maths. ChatGPT plugins can be a possible solution to this problem!

ChatGPT can use the Browsing plugin with a Chain of Thought technique to fact-check its answers on the Internet.

During the demo, Greg asked ChatGPT to fact-check the date difference between the publication time of two posts: Unsupervised Sentiment Neuron and Learning from human preferences.

3. Automating data analysis with Code Interpreter

The third example was the most mind-blowing to me. Greg presented how to use the Code Interpreter plugin in order to suggest and automate the data analysis process.

A cool feature of the Code Interpreter plugin is that it’s able to parse files in CSV format which makes it really useful for Data Scientists who want to speed up their data analysis.

This workflow consisted of:

Parsing and inferring the ontology of columns in a CSV file.
Proposing charts for data analysis: histograms, trendlines, word clouds.
Modifying the charts if asked to.

A cool thing is that the ChatGPT outputs both the code results as well as the output of code execution. This way we can easily debug or modify the analysis!

4. Creating a medical hypothesis

The last thing presented during the talk was the story of a dog whose life was saved by the medical diagnosis of ChatGPT:

GPT-4 suggested a medical issue the dog might have.
The first vet was wrong in their diagnosis.
The second vet confirmed that GPT-4’s suggestion was correct.

Responding to Musk's comment about dangerously strong AI, Altman tweeted: "I agree on being close to dangerously strong AI in the sense of an AI that poses e.g. a huge cybersecurity risk. and i think we could get to real AGI in the next decade, so we have to take the risk of that extremely seriously too."

Renata Kunz Mathewson stated that while ChatGPT may present new opportunities for content research, it's not going to replace the strategic work, the briefing process, and the iterative and collaborative process that goes into writing effective copy targeted at specific desired outcomes.

Then she asked ChatGPT whether it thinks it can replace a copywriter

ChatGPT's response:

"Hiring a professional copywriter versus relying solely on ChatGPT is like using a recipe versus hiring a chef. That is genius. But it is not unique. How many other users will ChatGPT respond to with the same or a similar answer?

Should we be concerned that ChatGPT will eventually replace people? Not in our opinion. It might encourage us to approach parts of our work, think about our interactions, and think in new ways. It is hoped that this will enable us to perform some of the routine, automatable jobs more effectively or quickly. As a result, we have more time to work on tasks that let us be more creative or strategic.
